Hey Pretty Mama,
As we are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week this week and many organizations and communities around the world hosted the 3rd Annual Big Latch on event this past weekend, which I attended, I thought it was important to share a fabulous recipe courtesy of WholeFoods Market in Coral Springs, Florida. Before though I wanted to talk about the benefits of brewer’s yeast which is included in this recipe. (On a side note: I was told about 6 million women worldwide participated in the Big Latch On event last year. I can’t wait to hear how many did this year) Way to go Mamas!
Brewer’s yeast is used in the production of beer and people have taken it as a dietary supplement for many years. It is highly nutritious, contains iron, protein, B vitamins, chromium, selenium and other trace minerals. It is often recommended as a nutritional supplement to increase the milk supply in nursing mothers. It is also believed to help with fatigue, post-partum baby blues and may boost your mood and energy levels.
It comes both in powder and tablet form and as you are ingesting it or mixing it in a smoothie it does get passed on to your child through your breastmilk. Please note that it is generally well tolerated; however, some infants have shown irritability as well as colic-like symptoms, so before you add this to your diet, speak with your doctor or a lactation consultant to be on the safe side. Brewer’s yeast can cause gas, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Stay away from brewer’s yeast if you have tendency to get yeast infections on a regular basis. Also do not mistake baker’s yeast or nutritional yeast with Brewer’s yeast. There is a difference.

2 Tbsp. ground flax

(agave or maple syrup to taste)

I hope you will like this recipe as much as I did when I tried it and hope it helps with increasing your milk supply Pretty Mama! Let me know what you think below.
