Just like incorporating a regular exercise routine before, during and post-baby, dietary wise it is vital that your body is fueled with the proper nutrients, to allow and ensure the healthy development and growth of your baby. Lack of proper nutrition or the intake of empty calorie foods can be detrimental for your baby’s growth, development and future health.
Rule of thumb for an expectant mom: Cutting down on all fats, sugars, and caffeine and increasing the intake of protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, water and calcium.
She should focus on nutrient-dense foods that include: Folate, Zinc, and Calcium and make sure to be taking a prenatal vitamin, before she falls pregnant, during pregnancy and also as she is nursing.
The focus should be on the quality of food versus the quantity of food and the type you are consuming. Eating for Two does not mean doubling the food but doubling the nutrients.
