Essential oils have wonderful and powerful properties, but like all things have to be used correctly and in the right amounts, as they are extremely potent and if not used right, can do more harm then good. I know a number of mamas who swear by them, to alleviate some of the pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, constipation, swelling etc. So to clarify and get a better understanding of what my pretty mamas can use safely during pregnancy, and which essential oils are to be avoided, I turned to my friends at “Essence of Nature Oils” who were so kind as to write a Guest blog post for you today. Is it safe to use essential oils while I’m pregnant? If so, how do I start?
Essential Oils and Pregnancy
During those difficult nine months of pregnancy, we are faced with a variety of changes in our bodies, hormones, and more. It’s hard to find relief from the many symptoms of pregnancy from morning sickness to fatigue, indigestion to constipation. What is a soon-to-be mama to do to alleviate all those aches and pains? Essential oils, which are highly concentrated, all-natural extracts from plants, can be used safely and effectively during pregnancy to ease those aches and pains.
It is best to consult the advice of a medical professional before taking or changing the course of your treatment. While the effects of essential oils have only been tested on animals, many medical professionals see essential oils as a complementary therapy.
If you want to start using Essential Oils during pregnancy, here are some tips:
- Use sparingly – try using one drop of essential oil at a time or diluting it to a 1% dilution rate or less. For example, try 1 drop of essential oil per 1 tablespoon of carrier oil working your way up to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil
- Diffusers are key (can link here to diffusers)- a diffuser is a great way to use essential oils while pregnant. Try using only 2 drops in a diffuser and notice any difference in how you feel. Also, only use it for 15 minutes out of every hour. Overpowering smells can contribute to nausea.
- Try not to use the same oil everyday but switch up the type of essential oils you use. Many essential oils have several different purposes.
- Wait until your second trimester to start using essential oils during pregnancy.
Essential Oils that are safe to use during pregnancy:
- Citrus oils, such as Tangerine and Neroli – are good for digestion and supports liver and lymph systems
- German Camomile – reduces anxiety, treats stomach problems, relieves muscle spasms and treats skin conditions
- Common Lavender – used topically for health looking skin throughout pregnancy
- Frankincense, can be used topically for healthy looking skin during pregnancy
- Peppermint – can help reduce symptoms of nausea, heartburn and ease digestion as it helps with low stomach bile production
- Ylang Ylang – supports overall hormonal health, supporting healthy hair growth and boost sex drive
- Bergamot – provides immune support and supports endocrine systems cypress
- Tea Tree Oil, although avoid use during labor
- Geranium – treats varicose veins, edema and swelling. Also helpful for treating stretch marks.
Avoid the following Essential Oils while you are pregnant:
- Nutmeg, may react with other over the counter medicines.
- Rosemary, which could cause contractions.
- Basil, which is thought to contribute to abnormal cell development.
- Jasmine and clary sage, which may trigger contractions.
- Sage and rose, which may cause uterine bleeding
- Juniper berry, which may affect your kidneys.
